Will You Come Today?

I sit by the window - a slight
breeze blowing through-
I search the doorway hoping
for just a glimpse of you.
The nurses, they are nice here-
the food here is ok-
I did'nt have the heart to tell
you I didn't want to stay!

I know with your Daddy passed on-
there was no room for me-
All of you children have your own
lives - your own family.
I sit here with my memories from
sun up to sundown-
I have learned that silence can
be a deadly sound.

I miss the laughter of you children
as you used to run and play-
I miss the antics of your father -
all the things he'd do and say.
I miss the joy of having a home-
a place to lay my head.
I miss the peace and contentment
after all the prayers were said.

All those years of dedication to my
home and family-
Now I just sit here and wait -
God, it get's so lonely!
So many nameless faces- they
all come and go-
As the clock on my dresser-
it always moves so slow.

I know you are busy with your
jobs and your homes-
But try to visit me more often-
I feel so alone.
Memories can't take the place of
a gentle hug or touch-
The world rushes on around me-
while I'm missing you so much!

Repost

I worked in a nursing home for eight years.
I seen firsthand the loneliness they feel
when families and friends don't visit. Bring
a book, read to them, bring a favorite
desert , but most of all....bring YOURSELF.
They still need you........

thought-provoking and powerful write, linda! so sad a lot of the older folks are often left alone; nobody seems not to want to have anything to do with them once they get old. they can offer such wisdom, and they are a joy to be around. i know..i used to visit several different older people in my neighborhood in ohio, and they were a delight; i enjoyed these visits!!

Wonderful reminder to us of what lies ahead. We should teach our children by doing for our older relatives so when it's our turn they'll be there for us.

My Mother works in a nursing home. She often brings some of her residents out to my house for morning tea. I could never understand people that shrug off the elderly. What a rich tapestry of memories those old ladies weave. I love to hear their stories....Good write. Thanks, Dani

Linda,
Elderly people are a special gift from God that need to be cherished. Someday they will be gone and then, too late, we find out what we missed.
Beautiful and heartrendering...
I still have tears rolling down my cheeks.

Old people are just to be disposed of
like all the rest of rare and wonderful things we throw out. and then one day someone finds our trash and realizes that it is a valued antique.
they bring it home and display it proudly.
for it still has all the beauty and grace that age brings.
So the question is why do we throw away what is valuable

Beautifully written. So sad and true. I used to do Pet Therapy at a nursing home with my little Pekiense and I would dress him as a soldier and the older gentlemen loved it. There but for the Grace of God go I!
Great work

Linda,
Superb! So true, life gets so busy that many people tend to forget. Even if you do not have a relative in a home, Visiting anyone in there would make them feel so loved and special.

You made me cry again sweet Linda. What a touching poem! How real it seems! These circumstances happen so often, and the Lady who didn't want to be there would not say a word for fear of upsetting the children. I can understand now more then ever what this means in regards to my understanding of life. I must do my duty towards my Lady. How could I leave her or put her away? But I think of many other things and I think of a Lady in my life now exactly like you. Exactly like you with the wonderful poetry that you write and that draws me to you like a magnet. God bless and keep you dear always. Bill Hugs
