Grandmas hands
withered by trials
and tears..
She struggled
through the years..
To be thrown back..
Forgotten..
Her life an empty phase..
cold nights
and long days.
A shell , nothing more..
staring at the door..
Hoping
for a friendly face..
Someone to take
her out
of this place.
Eighty five yrs.
and this is all...
Whoever had the gall..
to put her here
against her will..
Does anyone care
how Grandma feels?
Grandmas hands..
She could outwork any
man.
Now all I see is a
closed locked door...
No purpose in life..
anymore....
Her will is gone..
She sits and cries..
While a part of her
slowly dies.
She watches the window
tears and pain..
While God sends down
the pourin' rain.
Empty faces stare at her..
they come and go..
Wishing don't always
make it so.
Her home, her life
her family..
Stripped from her
don't you see?
Grandmas hands..weak and sore..
has scrubbed many
a floor.
She's bathed you in a big
old tub..
Then rubbed you down with
Vicks Vapor Rub.
She grew weary and you
put her here..
When you should have
loved and
kept her near.
Her hands now still
No one understands
how she feels.
A life so full of joy and
pride..
She made her own way
when Grandpa died.
She took care of you ..
why can't you understand..
The love that was shown
from Grandmas hand?
How utterly emotional, Linda, I have seen this...but I also saw my mother, tend her parents until they both died, 3 yrs. apart, my grandfather bereft, he told my grandma he was to go first, Grandma always was opinionated and stubborn. This piece also makes me fear for my future, in a way, and feel sorrow and guilt for all those people suffering like the woman in your piece...very powerful write.
Linda! As always...your work is truly amazing at how you can place yourselves in the shoes of so many. This is an excellent example of your talent.

This one has me weeping, Linda. I have always felt so deeply for the pain of the elderly. I took care of my parents until their deaths and they took care of theirs, it's the way it should be.
Linda, a beautiful and yet painful write. The treatment of the elder now-a-days is a pity. The respect for family is gone, no one has "the time" to take care of them anymore. As myself, my two children (not kids anymore..lol) have been involved in health care, they have also seen discarded lives due to age and hopefully, we as a family, will care for one another as it should be. I've always believed that the elderly should be treated with respect and admiration. Unfortunately i've never been given that chance as my grandparents died while I was a kid.
I always wonder when I look down the streets at the elderly, what life had they lived, what have they witnessed. Loved this write.

How sadly true that the aging are often pushed aside and forgotten. We all need to take the time to stay in touch and to allow them to remain active and vital.

My Grandma died at 103! I can't forget her
death date cause it was on December 7th. I
loved Grandma so much! She was the only one
I every felt close to. Her last few years
she was in a shelter care home. You have
really broken through to me my darling with
this poem. Memories of her flood back into
my mind. She was so sweet and I think a lot
like me. Of all the family she loved her
"Billy" the most. She never had any
money. We we very poor, but never have I
met a more wonderufl woman. I feel so guilty
because I did very little for her during her
lifetime. She asked for nothing and
received very little. But that didn't
effect her love for "Billy." I was so lucky
to have her all the years of my life.
Please, please maybe by showing your Grandma
how you love her now while you have one
alive, it will help me bear my guilt for not
helping mine more when she was alive. Linda
you always know how to say the right word
and do the right thing. I guess that is why
I love you from across a vast continent ...
as much as I do ... and darling I always
