Gertie, The Ostrich

After a visit to the zoo with my grandson, Max, on the weekend, this gorgeous ostrich (that I named Gertie) simply begged me to tell her story....giggle....

Poem Artwork

Gertie, the ostrich, a fine old girl
As curious as she could be!
Stretched her neck as high as she could
To see all that she could see!

Gertie liked to people watch
When the humans came to the zoo,
To visit the tigers and monkeys and bears
And all of her other friends too!

She’d struggle to maintain composure
While she stared every one of them down!
But she couldn’t keep the smile from her face
For they looked like little clowns!

Humans were short, with beady eyes
Feathers on only their heads!
And where they should have glorious beaks
Was a hole in their face instead!

It seemed to her, they were nature’s mistake
And she laughed every time they came!
Happy that she was an ostrich
And all creatures don’t look the same!

Love this one. I have always wondered if animals could talk, what would they say about us. This one gave me a good laugh. May God bless you every day of your life.

Annabel,
Very cleverly written, now we all know what the ostrich thinks when he looks at US. Excellent work!

Unbelievably cute poem that simply had to tickle Max.
Matter of fact, the entire concept sounds like a great concept for a children's book.

Very charming, and I love the way you have captured the apparent smile on the ostrich's face. Yes, indeed, humans must look very strange to the bird world!

This is so good and happy and deliriously ingenuous. Gertie's a charmer . . .
