Sometimes words are a weapon...

“(SOMETIMES) WORDS ARE A WEAPON”
(2004)

This lyric is featured in my book Soundtrack of My Life: Volume 1

A crowd gathers in the hallway
Looking at the girl in the distance
They think that they have their way
Like when they put her down for instance

They say she’s fat and has a big butt
That she’s a freak, the worst of kind
That nothing about her is hot
And that she’s got a weird mind

But they don’t know that she can hear
All nasty remarks thrown her way
She is not deaf and it is clear
That they are bruising her with what they say

Words say plenty and they’re part of life
But they can also be a weapon that replaces the knife
They can damage and kill and slice many hearts
Make us emotionally ill and tear us apart
And the more that we find ourselves criticized
We’ll only be more psychologically downsized

You’re standing next to the crowd
Watching this hideous game
But you say nothing aloud
And you don’t feel any shame

You just stand and do nothing
Watch the girl being bruised
Let me tell you this one thing
You’re making me confused

How can you just stand there
With those cruel heartless jerks
And not try to help out the girl
Leaving things in an antisocial whirl

Words say plenty and they’re part of life
But they can also be a weapon that replaces the knife
They can damage and kill and slice many hearts
Make us emotionally ill and tear us apart
And the more that we find ourselves criticized
We’ll only be more psychologically downsized

How would you feel if you were in this situation
I am sure you wouldn’t be in a state of elation
You’d feel hatred inside toward those that muck you
You’d feel so low that it would make you duck too
Hide yourself from the rest of the usual crowd
Because those words would not make you proud
You’ll have low self-esteem and feel put down
You’ll be the one wearing the gold crown
The crown of humiliation and shame
You won’t even want to wear your name

So why would you stand there and not try to act
You are not one of them so it’s time for a pact
This should serve as a lesson you better learn
If it happens again it will be your turn
To stand up for what you believe is right
To stand strong and put up a good fight
To help out somebody who is in need
And maybe then you’ll turn into a seed
That will spread the message across to others
To friends, mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers
And put an end to this cruel heartless game
And put those that play it on the wall of shame

Words say plenty and they’re part of life
But they can also be a weapon that replaces the knife
They can damage and kill and slice many hearts
Make us emotionally ill and tear us apart
And the more that we find ourselves criticized
We’ll only be more psychologically downsized

Would that our own confident, positive self-image were all-sufficient, and that no-one could steal our self-esteem unless we granted them permission, but alas not all are as independent-minded. Thus, your poem strikes a chord in most people, but not all. I did enjoy seeing your way with words. At once so disparaging and disarming. Thank you for sharing, Lena.

Your lyrics are most apt and timely in this age of bullying of all forms, Lena. I can imagine a rapper artist doing this song; and I'm sure it could be adapted to other genres as well. I am also amazed at how your theme coincides with the central idea of my latest poem which is born of personal experience and which I know you have read since you left such a detailed and meaningful review of it. Thank you for sharing, Lena. Love and best wishes to you,

Regis
