years ago at evening
By the winding river
Where the willows droop
and fire-flies flicker,
evening deepened and I
counted newborn stars.
The day retired and I
found an alien shore.
Some fey glamour
fell over me
or I was torn away
from sanity
But I dared within
my heart to see
one of nature's
tiny mysterys.
In rose petal gown,
silver slippers,
And dandylion crown
primatic wings,
diffusing the sun,
A fairy child stared
dancing on the wind
with no thought to run.
I caged her in a jar
with holes in the lid.
and ran to show my mom
And her new boyfriend sid.
But when I disclosed
my new found prize
a jar of cobwebs
met their eyes.
Its all right,
my mother said.
the heart must hold
what rules the skies
No one can keep
what cannot be owned
for greed decays
and beauty flies.
