Camo Christmas

On the side of his cot; He sits
all alone-
Untying his boots; 'jus thinkin'
of home-
Cavlar kept close; In case of
an attack-
In this sand covered hell; Known
only as Iraq

He looks all around and then
sighs really low-
Yearning to hold the wife he
loves so-
He opens his wallet to take a quick
look-
At the photo of his son; Reading his
first book

Three nights before Christmas; No
lights in the hooch-
Not a creature was stirring; Not
even a stray pooch-
Soldier by choice; He knows
the routine-
It's water not eggnog; In his
camo'd canteen

There's no fireplace to hang the
stockings with care-
St. Nick won't be visitin'; He
wouldn't dare-
It's Apaches not reindeer, that
fills the night sky-
On Dasher; On Prancer; Keep
flyin' on by

He lies back on his cot; In hopes
of a nap-
While dreamin' his daughter, is
snug in his lap-
There's no room for sugarplums; to
dance in his head-
He has to stay focused on the
insurgents instead

It's a camoflauged Christmas; No
holiday cheer-
Knowing the bombers are trying
to get near-
Soldier by choice; He knows
why he's here-
He laces up his boots, and
whispers real low-
Merry Christmas Sweetheart-
Maybe next year

I almost missed this one; but I caught it in time; I hope you can can still read it; because you know, you can rhyme! For all the soldiers over there, I hope you know, that Southern Horizons wished you a Ho Ho Ho! Excellent poem for our troops... Job Well Done!

This poem really touched me, Lisa. I think we should all remember that no matter what our opinion is about war, we should love and respect our soldiers as a unit, our hearts should be with them. As Aberjhani says, "a beautifully compassionate write." Merry Christmas, Lisa! Glad you're still here. ~~Nordette

This is so real it has to bring a tear to any human that reads it. I wish that history had put and end to soldiers being in combat at Christmas but it is only wishful thinking. All we can do is offer our salutes and our prayers to our brothers and sisters who fight the fight for us.

Wow what a Christmas gem for our lonely soldiers away from home. You are the master poet for all our fighting service men in every war that has ever been fought. My hat is off to you young lady. I missed a few Christmasses during WW2 so I know the feelings you have described well.

It is a huge sacrifice that our Soldiers and their families give as they devote their lives to "freedom for all". I think that even over missed birthdays, missed first steps and missed graduations it must be the most difficult of all to miss Christmas as all of the very rights that he has committed himself to protecting come into play during this one very special holiday season. Thank you for this wonderful rememberance of our men and women in uniform who sacrifice all on, Christmas and every day, that we may live under the mighty Flag of Freedom. You do these military writes better than anyone, Lisa, thank you again for your wonderful words. Merry Christmas to you, those you love and to every soldier who so bravely serves. God bless them all and keep them safe.
Take care,
Sherry
