How long ago it was,
When we laid on a bed of soft green,
And promised our hearts to each other…
I never believed it would happen,
Not like you-
Your faith sustained us both,
During the long years we were apart…
Now,
In our special place,
I hear your heart beating so steadily,
Under my fingertips,
Like a lost limb you still feel,
Though it has long been gone…
I reach up to kiss your sweet lips,
I remember so well,
But you are not there…
In the desert of my life,
You were the only flower I saw,
The only one I struggled to believe,
Could only hope your love was true …
You captured my heart,
With your bright smile,
And the sunshine,
I saw burning in your eyes,
Alas my love,
The world is too big for some of us,
It is an empty place of broken hearts,
And shattered dreams…
Thus I returned home,
To mountain streams and quiet ponds,
The place where we made promises,
And childish dreams…
I walked the path today,
The one that led to our future,
Do you know the waterfall is still flowing?
I can hear it now,
Rushing over the rocks,
Washing our fears away…
We never talked there,
Remember?
How we loved that sound!
So powerful and free!
Remember when we wrote notes to each other?
And cast them from the shore,
Saying we would return one day,
And find them again,
Count how many of our dreams came true …
I found one of yours today,
And it made me cry-
When I read it alone,
Under the too blue sky…
I threw it back in,
But I’ll never forget what it said;
Written in your child’s hand,
And read by my adult eyes…
I watched it flow over the waterfall,
And heard it shatter against the rocks,
Seeing with blaring clarity,
Those words you wrote so long ago;
“I hope one day you come to know,
How much I love you!”
I stared at the shiny fragments,
Reflecting my tears in the sun,
Your message as shattered as our dreams,
And whispered softly in the roar of the fall,
“My God,
I wish you knew how much,
I loved you too…”
Spell binding! All consuming, the visual setting and words flow together.
"I stared at the shiny fragments,Reflecting my tears in the sun" all the way to the end. The reverance to the place, whispering. So eliquent and heart felt. A new favorite. Many blessings~Shell
beautifully, heartwrenchingly written, by one who's been there? emotions clearly conveyed

This is very sad, Retta. It made me cry. Remind of what I'm going through. Beautiful poem. Love, Alex
oooh, I love waterfalls...
I enjoyed the way you kept returning to the water image to make sense of the way life has gone, the constancy of the river and its falls but the ever changing nature of the running water itself are a graphic metaphor of what we all go through.
A really good poem

So poignant and piercing - powerful, too with the mighty roar of the waterfall pounding persistently throughout this timeless piece. Our lives continue to float along downstream, but, as we look back upstream, the power of retrospective produces fresh passions within us... Meanwhile, it is as if the same water flows just round in circles back at the waterfall - as demonstrated by re-finding that message of so many years' previously. Shatteringly beautiful write, Retta, thank you. Kate xx
Hello Reatta, deep love write, really comes through, I love waterfalls also. I'm right there with you. l&p G

A fine, tragic love poem. The yearning and the nostalgia of the words are very satisfying, yet painful to read if you read it with open eyes. You captured the best of both worlds here, the lost love and the yearning for rebirth.
Lovely!!!!! nothing better than to have those special spots to return to that we shared with ones we loved and continue to love,,
thank you as this was very very good..
have a great weekend
