I stand on the edge of Life,
Trembling with anticipation-
But not fear,
I do not fear Death,
Indeed,
I welcome its cold embrace
Without quite knowing why...
Despair comes in all its forms,
Leaving me feeling empty and alone,
Finding no reason to stay,
I take a final breath,
Before I'm on my way...
Then you come in all your anger,
And blazing glory,
Yank me away from the edge-
I scream in your face:
"Who are you, that you must save me?
What draws you to my side?
Why can't you ever just let me hide,
Let me go into my darkest night!"
I crave the darkness...
Even as you wrap your arms around me,
Fight in vain against the strength you use
To trap me in the cage of your love-
I scream and pound my fists against you,
Trying to give you the pain I feel.
Trying to make you see,
I don't want you to save me!
But your power and strength
Were ever greater than mine,
And my struggles are in vain,
For your love for me,
Is more than I can overcome-
Damn you!
Can't you see how it makes me feel?
I am everything false!
Nothing about me is real!
Let me go!
Release me!
I weep bitterly,
Try to tell you my need for freedom,
Need to measure how far it is to the ground,
Let me go,
And I promise to scream your name
On the way down!
But I am trapped,
Held in your arms like a vise,
Forcing me against your chest
Where I hear your heart beating,
Drumming in my soul like a call to war-
I feel the deep rumble in your throat,
Hear you chanting my name,
Like a prayer our God never hears-
It strikes me as hard as any blow,
And I fall limp against you at last.
My need for Death having finally passed...
I am given release by my lover's harsh kiss,
That crush my lips and make them bleed.
Watch with eyes that don't want to see,
As you smeared the blood that came from me,
Over the name carved above your heart,
To remind me of who it was that you loved...
Now your rage and grief builds toward me,
You drag me to the edge of my abyss,
Whisper cruely in my ear,
Words that pain my heart and make me fear-
"Are you so ready to say good-bye,
Leaving me standing here,
Without knowing why-
Let's go together then,
You and I,
Hand in hand, Lets learn to fly!"
As he steps ever closer to the edge,
Dragging me, His arms outstretched,
I scream with a cry even the eagles hear,
They swerve down low to listen to my reply:
"NO!
Baby, it was never you,
That I wanted to die..."
It is only as we sink to the ground,
His lips covering mine,
How deeply,
How tragically we are bound-
I realize sadly only then,
He has somehow managed
To save me again...
