His eyes were the blue of my soul,
Eyes which saw clear through me,
Whenever I smiled and laughed,
He alone reached over,
To wipe the tears from my eyes…
He never heard the lies,
I told so easily,
To lead the others astray…
He heard only the whispering,
That crept from beneath,
That exterior façade-
Perhaps that is why I loved him thus,
Could never forget his love or trust,
For while others tried to tie me down,
He alone cut the bonds on his own accord,
And threw me the rope,
Telling me to go or stay,
But do it,
Because I wanted it that way…
No one had ever set me free before,
Never let me choose between one or more,
Had always told me what to do,
Forcing me to do what they wanted me too…
Maybe it was the way he listened when I spoke,
Staring at me until I felt like I would choke,
On the words spilling from my mouth in vain,
Wondering if I had gone insane!
Why say all the things I never speak about?
How could he listen to me until I ran out
Of things to say and nod his head,
And hold my hand,
Saying he could understand,
And mean it!
God!
How he could listen,
And hear my soul speak truths,
I didn’t even know it knew…
Until at last,
I could never lie to him,
Never betray his trust,
For he loved me,
Loved Me!
Forgave me,
When I could not forgive,
My own dark sins…
In the end,
He told me I was beautiful,
And taught me to believe it,
God,
When he reached for me,
I had to be there,
For he taught me,
How wonderful it was,
To be needed,
Rather than to need…
