Does Every Child Cry?

They begin soft and pink,
Needing their mother’s milk,
But for some,
That’s too much,
Can’t nuzzle, cuddle, or caress…

They come pink and soft,
But sometimes they get dropped,
Sometimes they crack,
And all their softness spills out,
And it hardens into a crystal outer shell,
That is invisible,
But you must believe,
It is there…

The outside is hard as hell,
But hidden inside,
Is this thing,
That use to be soft and pink,
But like a broken toy,
They are damaged,
So nobody wants to play
With them anymore,
And their hard,
So nobody wants to touch them,
And their cracked,
So nobody wants to love them,

But,
They started out pink,
And,
They started out soft,
And,
They started out so perfect,
And,
Now they’re just so needful,
But,
Nobody needs them,
And,
These salty pearls,
Just keep raining down,
From their eyes…

And,
They’re so beautiful,
In their cracked,
Imperfect shells,
So Beautiful,
They make me,
Want to cry…

Reindeer...Oooh-my eyes are teary! This is true. I dearly love children. This made me remind myself that my mouthy 11 year old... is STILL fragile this way. In every day life...we forget the times that they stood in the corner and pooped their pants...then cried for us...and for our help :) This also makes my heart go out to those kids with the abused cracked imperfected shells. Thank you...Teresa

"and they're so beautiful, in their cracked, imperfect shells, so beautiful they make me want to cry." powerful words! they are precious, and they deserve our love and compassion, especially those who are disabled or have special-needs. but ALL children deserve our love and compassion, not just the special children! love, your friend in texas, karen lynn. (((HUGS))) :( >tears <

Such a sad statement, but so well described. Makes my mother's heart break. Wonderful write.

Have to agree with Erin. Many shells to be gathered. Random acts of kindness make all the difference. Beautiful write. ~Joseph

Retta, many of us cry with the damaged pinkness, many of us care, too late, perhaps, to save the sum, but the compassion is out there, along with the compression, of humanity... I want...to gather the cracked pink shells, and comfort them. Should I see such in my "real" life, I will make an effort to make a difference, for you and the many others who words ache and yearn...maybe the act of showing a kindness will give a small measure back to the luckiness of my life.

I have been thinking of a piece called "Colors of Our Childhood", which shows the hues of what has been delivered carried into what we are. Your voice is a piece of my thoughts, gathered and added to my need. Thank you for your strength.
