* I think I should perhaps explain...My father physically abused my mother, I can still see my 12 year old brother trying to pull him off her...that is when I realized what he was...sorry for the image...R
Now and then,
I dream of him,
This old man,
Smelling of whiskey and old spice…
His black eyes once shiny,
Now dull and opaque,
Like my hate…
In my dreams,
Once again,
He is my father,
Strong and powerful,
A great warrior,
Protecting my youth-
Guarding my honor…
My Love for him,
Made him a God…
And only recently did I learn,
That when you stop believing in them,
Gods die…
Like my father,
Who is dead in my heart,
For the eyes of my youth
Were betrayed by the truth I discovered
In my soul…
I saw at last,
The many things he had become,
And the indifference he felt
At what he had done…
His strength came from an 80 proof bottle,
And although he swore to protect my life,
He ran when the time came,
Leaving his sons to do the job for him…
And I knew for sure He had died,
When I saw him,
And his eyes passed over me,
Like one he could not see…
But every now and again,
I catch the scent of Old Spice,
And I whirl to see if it is him…
And I see him-
With the lying eyes of my youth,
Proud and Brave,
For just a second or so,
Before the image slowly begins to fade…
And he stands before me,
A shadow of what
I once believed him to be…

Old Spice is a scent that follows me even now. Wonderful write. Never apolozie for an image your heart needed to talk about.
Years ago, I read this book called the Superman myth, back in the 70's. about why men become the way they do...there were a million reasons listed, but I could find not one excuse for abusive conduct.......
reasons and excuses are 2 entirely different creatures.......and when someone loses reason, albiet thru drink or whatever...they become a creature....

Raw with emotion, powerful write that wrenches the heart.
heart-wrenching Reindeer, but men are just that men, not gods nor are women, we are all weak souls trying to find our way, and the grace of a creator helps, if we ask him to...

Sad, abuse is. I'm glad you survived...
excellent write Reindeer.....
Though there was no beatings that I was aware of, my father also fell from Godhood to Alcoholism, he divorced his 6 kids and eventually died. Your piece exquisitely expresses the loss of an idol some children have forced into their conscience, a painful and bewildering experience that leaves gaps and cracks that stretch and ripple our futures... Sad write, sad memories, Retta.

We always longed for the beautiful things in life, even the memories. I hope you will always remember him as the way he used to be. Very expressive write indeed!
