Cursed at birth,
For I was born the wrong sex.
Little use for girl children,
A bargaining tool,
Nothing more,
It was the son’s she adored,
The ones she wanted more…
The days were long,
When I dreamed of being a man,
And trained myself,
To have a warrior’s soul,
So she could somehow,
Find a way,
To love even me…
But I failed miserably,
For I was born cursed at birth…
And taught so well,
I was of little use…
Thus I sought to make myself wise,
And sat at the feet of many masters,
And at last,
All agreed,
I was the one,
That survived the best,
Better than the rest…
But I knew in my heart,
It was all a lie,
For under my silver shield
A cancer grew,
And ate my soul…
I was everything to everyone,
Yet nothing to me,
For I wasn’t what I wanted to be…
I wasn’t free of her hold on me…
Until one day,
A wise and lovely man,
Taught me what was best to keep,
And what to leave,
Shored up my poet’s heart,
And gathered up the pieces of my soul,
And made me whole,
Set them adrift like the stars,
To glitter like gold,
And taught me-
The world could come to know,
And love,
Even me…

Great work because it is honest. Sometimes we have to give ourselves what we didn't get from others, and also be willing to receive a blessing from another when it is given.

Beautiful piece, Retta. It powerfully lays bare the effects of a damning prejudice that hopefully is on its way out of all our lives. Peace and love to you.
