Shadows in My Heart




You call to me,
From across the sea,
And I am bid to come,
And stay awhile,
Listen to your voice,
Whispering sweet words,
And you play your guitar and sing
The melodies we both love,
When the sun sinks
Below the horizon,
And yet the stars have not risen,
We walk to the edge of the river,
And I pluck the petals of the flowers
And say that childish chant,
He loves me,
He loves me not,
Over and over
Until the petals are gone
Floating downstream
Carrying my hopes and dreams
Over the edge,
I watch them float away
And you reach for my hand,
But I walk a little away
Knowing how much
The game lies...

I hear you sigh
At my back,
And can't stop the tear
Or the fear that beats
In this damaged heart,
Wishing sometimes
You would go away
Yet fear that more
Then if you stay...

Shadows in my heart,
Echoes of a love that once was,
Trying to come again,
Dare I let it live,
Breathe,
Grow,
Or shall I crush it down,
Grind it to powder
To lay upon my wall
Of stone,
Guarding this heart of mine,

They said,
Leave the heart to heal,
And in time,

But I never wanted it,

And slowly you walk away,
As I return to where I stay,
Watching the moon rise,
And the stars come out at last,
I listen to the wolf howl at the lonely sky,
And the hawk screams his nightly hunting cry,
Somewhere in the darkness,
I hear a door close,
As the shadows began to grow larger,
Making those scary figures we feared
When we were children…

I feared them then,
Sometimes even now,
But then the light of your love,
Cast its light in the gloom,
And I see there is nothing in the room,
Just the same things that always were,
Familiar and safe,
Only one thing new,
And my sweet friend,
That is you…

I realized then,
The door I heard was closing
As you came in,
Whispering in my heart,
You will always be my friend…
