Democracy at Work

There is no joy in hiding, I’ve tried, it doesn’t work
There is no comfort to be found in places damp and murk
I’ll not wave the banner loud nor long
That portends my pain and fear
But please God spare me from another
Contentious election year.

My ears recede my eyes recoil
My vision suffers pain
When slings and arrows shot about
Bombard my battered brain.

Who knew our mayor was a drunk
His wife a rampant slut
Our senator finds great joy
In reading poetic smut.
Like this.

The CIA is in cahoots with
That Russian guy named Putin
And Dick Cheney’s making a comeback
He wants more bombs and shootin’.

Hilary and Bill are on the splits
She caught him dead to rights
She found him building a brand new harem
Out near the Golan Heights.

Jeb Bush is smarter than brother George
Cause he can spell Iraq
He’s starting a brand new campaign
To take our country back.
To the Dark Ages.

Kentucky gave us Mitch McConnell
The Hatfield’s and McCoy’s
Now they’re serving up a dose of
Rand Paul along with other boys.
Hog tied.

Obama’s in search of greener pastures
He wants to travel far
Mitt Romney suggested a one-way ticket
To far off Zanzibar.

The Grand Old Party has a new platform
Complete in every way
There’s even a trap door in the middle
Where dissenters swing and sway.

But Hilary’s definitely the one
A lass beyond compare
She doesn’t need a running mate
She already has a pair.

I loved this romp and there's hardly anything or anyone you didn't stomp on, Ed. WE're sure going through a lot of adjustment. Only question is whether we can do it soon enough to help ourselves. I'm reminded of Mencken who told us that democracy is the worst form of government except for any other; and H.G. Welles who quipped that the trouble with socialism is that it takes up too many evenings. Keep 'em coming!

Where's Pat Paulsen when we need him. Loved the humor and sarcasm in this brilliant write.

After I stopped laughing, I have to commend you on your insight. Probably the reason everything is so laughable is because, as my sister pointed out, we have a "Republic," and not a democracy… Whatever the hell that means.

Contention seems to be the name of the game and the more mudslinging the better. I seem to recall the Lincoln, Douglas debates. And then there was that guy, Benedict Arnold. And scandals galore from Teapot Dome to Tippecanoe. Politics will never change and be the source of great humor like yours forever, I guess.

I find it anoymusing that if we change the names and country it is pretty much the same in all democracies... Great poem!

My dog Rufuz ran for president the first time Obama got in and I truly think he would do a better job then and this time, though he is dead, but what the hell, so are most politicians dead from the neck up, anyway...-e-

Although you were way to nice to Hillary (even with the missing "l"), but you pretty much kicked ass with everything else. Me too, rolling my eyes at the prospect of yet another darn presidential election . . .
