This is just a little humor dedicated to Carl Sagan, the man who lit up the universe better than anyone since God said "Let there be light."

Ingenuity (and the helicopter probe)

If you wish to make an apple from scratch
you must first invent the universe
. --Carl Sagan

It hovered near the surface
It hovered in thin air
It hovered till we wondered
What was holding it up
Up there.

Let’s face it
When it comes to astounding others
We’ve got it all down cold
With our stunning Ingenuity
We own the smartsville mold.

We know because...
The Martians all hide from us
Can’t find ‘em anywhere
Still we know they’re undercover
They haven’t got a prayer.

Our TV cameras are scanning
Across the wide terrain
In every nook and cranny
We could find ’em in the rain.
Or the snow.

Perhaps we’ll settle for water
Or just a piece of ice
There’s no apple pie up there
Else we’d have ourselves a slice.

Long go and far away
A boy scanned the nighttime skies
With an active imagination
He cut it down to size.

We owe him a debt of gratitude
He blazed us all a trail
He taught us that we should never freeze
Out of fear that we might fail.

I love the scarlet Sagan quotation...
This was fun, with a serious undertone...
I enjoyed it!

Great poem Ed. loved it. Lotta development and work there. Great choice of subject and wording.

Yes, it is indeed quite a clever accomplishment, getting one of those infernal devices that 'fly' by beating the air to death (I'm a lifelong 'fixed-wing' person, myself) to sustain flight in an atmosphere that is about 95% C02 and averages only about 6-7 millibars of pressure (on its surface), year-round. And yes, Earth critters can be deucedly clever little primates at times, but the REAL joke here is that Mars has in all likelihood launched dozens of futile expeditions to Earth over the past several thousands of years and simply given up in their efforts to find truly 'intelligent' life on this planet! [I know I speak for all my fellow Tau Ceti-F fellows at least when I say this, as an undocumented space alien observer here...] :)

I love the humor you put in this poem. And most people will not understand the accomplishment made by making a helicopter fly where there is almost no atmosphere at all. Perhaps sound may actually travel between us when we arrive if we turn off our intercoms and yell real loud through our Mars suits.

But it might be better to have an experiment like that to find out if we can communicate through the Martian atmosphere the way we do on earth. Just thinking (I know that thinking is dangerous). ;-)

We search for the Martians, but we will never find them. Very funny indeed, Ed.
