Afraid

Days of fear
Hours of apprehension
Minutes of terror
Seconds on the edge of eternity
The telephone
The doorbell
The unopened letter
The face in the mirror
The shadow that stalks
But the greatest fear for me
Is that I might fall
Into the hole left in my soul
When you had to go away
My missing you
Is my misery

Regis,

Is that I might fall

Into the hole left in my soul

When you had to go away....

Exactly - losing a love is like free falling into the seemingly bottomless pit of despair. And perhaps worse, is the knowing that the ground will rise up to meet you but the impact may very well shatter your perceived existence....

Exceptional piece!

I really love these lines, they truly called to me,

Your words, "Is that I might fall Into the hole left in my soul
When you had to go away." reminds me of the darkness and pain that I had felt when my father died. I was only 13, yet I felt as though I would fall into the huge hole that was in my own soul. Fear always accompanies pain. It is the fear of change in the person's life after the person has left us. The words in your poem create a vivid picture in my mind, and I can sense the loneliness. You truly are a talented poet, and this is admirable work.

Regis,

Strange, but I knew what this poem was about by the time I got through the first few lines. Perhaps because I've felt this way; most everyone has. That's how well you captured those emotions. I especially like the fourth line and the use of "eternity" because when you hurt this bad...it seems to last for an eternity. An intense spotlight on your sensitive side. Thank you for sharing this one! Hugs:)

Regis you have articulated "fear" with such a high standard of eloquence. The last three lines made me fall into invisible retreats, flashing back past memories of pain and sadness when my love had to go away, when my missing her was my misery. Worse still, she felt more pleased with my troubes. I continued like that until the tide turned to my side. But I am not a cruel guy, Regis, I treated her as humanely as possible, though not able to bring back the sweet old days.

As usual you have covered so much of the internal and external landscapes with very few lines, excellently chosen thoughts and the words to express them. So much good tension in this poem, Regis, and the understatement of the last two lines packs a solid punch - where it hurts! Can feel the aching chasm here, but have to agree that the fear of it seems to increase its magnitude; may you find the stitches of love with which to close the thing up; I am sure you will, because there's more than enough of your own beauty and graciousness to fill any yawning gap about your person!
