I find it hard to be optimistic right now. Photos by me (my kids were quite a bit younger but the cherry blossom snow was for real). On the left is the road to my home. These images are very much in contrast with the way I feel.
Write Me A Poem
Write me a poem You said A pretty poem With birds singing Trees swaying in gentle breeze Butterflies fluttering in fragrant air Sun shining In sapphire sky Happy children playing In fields of rainbow flowers And cherry blossom snow Until the mystical moon tucks them in Their cozy beds and dreams A poem with fireflies Like dancing stars And... you know… ...Write me a poem like that You said But I cannot For my mind is oppressed With images of war Dying soldiers Never coming home Suicide bombers Guns and tanks Global warming Dying oceans Drying rivers Burning forests And souls who have given up So I cannot write your pretty poem My love
These times of unrest don't lead to much happiness, and it is hard to feel much like writing a poem at times. Breaking news each day isn't good, had some this a.m. that wasn't good. won't go into detail here.
I AM SO GLAD THAT THIS WAS SOME TIME AGO REGIS AND YOU HAVE HEALED BEAUTIFULLY...I KNOW IT IS HARD TO ACCEPT, BUT ALL YOU WERE FEELING THEN WENT INTO MAKING THE POET YOU ARE TODAY...I HAVE READ YOUR OFFERINGS OF NOW AND THEY ARE NOT JUST PRETTY BUT....BEAUTIFUL! I feel like this all the time Regis. But, I find, magically, that by writing on the depressing subjects, it clears the channel and I'm able to get to that other fluffy stuff....sometimes. Well done!
Although every day is a new day, and emotions are dynamic, for we have all felt this way, but tomorrow you may feel the need to write that poem for your love, or next week, or next year.
Continue to write the pretty poems so one day your daughters will read them and maybe even your son will feel it's okay that a man share his emotions. Write what you'd want to say to them. One day they will read it! You are a good poet Regis!

I am thinking, Reg, of the reasons I write. Is it escape or is it reality finally escaping? One thing I know for sure is, in talking recently with some young men who have returned from Iraq, that it is not a pretty situation there, but they accept the cause and wanted to make their tour worthwhile...to make a difference. They believe in something we don't always understand. The fight for a world of pretty poems...so that they can celebrate the freedom and enjoyment of writing and reading them. I hope you can write them soon.

I think that one of the primary reasons I write poetry is to find a temporary escape from the ugly realities we face each day -to find a subject that appeals to my sense of goodness and order. The world seems to be in total chaos. Amidst all the ugliness, I think it is important to write about the things in life which inspire me and give me reason for hope. I hope you get to the place where you can write that "pretty poem" and fill our imaginations with wonder, passion and hope -share your talent with the world and make it a better place. I regret to say, Reg, that I believe your words in this poem express what many, many of us feel nowadays about the state of the world.
But, O, my, I love the two pictures above. What a wonderful roadway.
It's like something in my dreams. And your children! Having so much fun! Enjoying life as it should be enjoyed, as it was intended to be enjoyed.
I see that you have been in the den for several years and have thousands of review. There is much I need to learn from you through your writings. Now, is the time for me to pause awhile and brouse. In your work, I know there are riches to be found. Thank you for sharing so much with us. Please don't leave us alone, hear?
B R A V O !! Mawkish sentimentality is hard to take in the best of times, and if not the worst of times, it often seems that things cannot go more sour. . .then they deteriorate! I find it helps to read a lot of history. On the other hand, it only makes it clearer how little learning has taken place. Since I am not religious, I can't fall back on "original sin." Wouldn't want to in any event. Have to h o p e. But. . .what the hell is wrong with us???

Perhaps your love thought that a pretty poem with birds singing would release the mind from such oppressing and the trees swaying in gentle breeze would set the images of war at ease That butterflies in fragrant air could bring peace to love ones everywhere The shining sun in sapphire sky would bring better memories then where they lie The Happy children in fields of flowers could replace the vision of those fateful towers The showers delight of cherry blossom snow what a delight instead of these things we know The moon light cast on their bed and dreams would bring warmth and comfort to mischievous schemes The dance of the fireflies afire like stars bring forth tears to quench the withering thus far So though you perhaps see one half a cup be thankful your love there has not given up. Regis - My friend in poetry and life - Mine is the 84th Review of your poem. My God, I don't get that many letters of love from these wonderful people on some poems I leve here for a month or more. Yes, we're concerned about you, and I would like to see you consider a few suggestions. They come from a man who served five years in WW II, sent friends away to Korea, almost saw my son go to Viet Nam just as it ended, and now we have grandchildren serving in the Army and Navy of the US in and toward Iraq. Now for the suggestions:
1. Stop reading newspapers and listening to commercials with war news stuffed between;
1. Spend more time with friends and others who want to talk about something other than politics, war, and the price of gas;
3. Realize how many friends you have, and that they, along with your family, care about you;
4. On AD, read only positive and beautiful poems written by good people who know that we will survive bad things;
Write me a poem; a beautiful, loving and sweet poem, and write all 83 of the others a poem over the next 84 days!

Ever watched a sunrise,

Observed a lovely sunset,
after a long day has been met?
Better than this,
closed the outside world
out with a goodbye kiss.
Then said hello to your inner being,
the inner world where you are king.
Just enjoyed breathing good,
with strong lungs that are good.
Then watched a little old lady with a breather
struggling just to walk and get air,
then thanking God your body is not yet there.
Knowing she can't depart from her life support,
but you can play on a basketball court.
Treat yourself good Regis because life and others might not,

We must rise above all this sorrow, Dear Regis. Hearts with wings, like yours, can do so easily.
When a man has his beautiful, loving family close to him, he should be able to forget, occasionally, the troubles of the world, and in his joy, write them a pretty poem. A part of my family (one of my three daughters) is coming across the continent to visit next week. We will probably discuss some of those darker aspects of life, as well as some of the beautiful ways that she is discovering about how this world operates (she is a chemist/nuclear physicist). But just being together again will be poetry of the purest joy. I'm looking forward to it so much, why shucks, I might write a pretty poem.
Best regards my friend,

Things seem to get worst each day! Our values are so screwed up! Will we ever learn to live in harmony with others? With the planet? Write, Dear Regis, continue to write. Thus, you may cause someone's eyes and mind to open to true life values.
The world will be in chaos with or without us, Regis. There is little purpose in feeling blue over those things we have no power to change. To be depressed is to barely be alive and that is not how we should choose to spend our days; every minute lost to sorrow is another we can never regain. Live life to the fullest and understand that, even though we are a part of all that is going on, the most important mission we have is living our life in a way that will make us happy and that will transfer over to those we love and those we associate with. Happiness, like love, is a gift that we give to ourself, Regis, no other person will ever be able to do that for us. To live in happiness or sadness is our choice, and this morning, the sunrise was a gorgeous electric pink that tinted everything in my view. For me, this was a gift given to remind us of all the beauty and wonderfulness that surrounds us, despite the greed, irresponsibility and uncaring spirit of so many humans...I refuse to become one of them and I refuse to awaken to each day in sorrow. So, think about all the beauty that blesses each of us and write that love poem!
Take care,
Sherry
A wonderful poem, Regis. The stark contrast is heartbreaking.
Consider this: Some are called to go and fight -- through physical contact. Others are called to stay and write -- through God-given talent. Your writing is a weapon and a shield, battling against the cruelties around you, and helping others to focus on the beauties and goodness God has provided for us to enjoy.
Sometimes I feel selfish and wrong for the luxuries and blessings I have been given. Then I realize God has allowed me to have family, friends and even material things to bless me, and I thank Him from deep in my heart. Even the simplest things are tremendous blessings--a bed, a comfortable chair, warmth in my home, a refreshing hot shower. Start thinking in this vein and even as we pray and hope for the soldiers and for a good ending to the war, we can look up and rejoice. And at the end of it all--Jesus is coming! Someday all wars will cease and that is cause for rejoicing!
I haven't seen any of your work for a while so I came here hoping to find something new. It was well worth it.
I like your new picture. Whatever happened to that blue guy? He's the Regis I first met here. I think I like this one better, though.

The picture of your children is just precious!
Such beauty, depth, and darkness in this piece. Your words touched me deeply, Reg. I do not know what to say that has not already been said.
Ahh, Regis ... such beauty! And such sorrow. But we each have the ability to paint beauty into our own little corner of this often ugly world. And I believe we are responsible for doing just that ... for those we love, and those who love us. We can mourn the wars, and the destruction of our resources. We can shed tears for the despondent souls. We can pray.
But we must never, never, never, never, never, never, NEVER give up!
Outstanding write here Regis...you have allowed the reader to see two sides you and life my friend, the soft and tender love of a family whom we seek comfort in when we need to escape the harsh reality of what is going on around us...I too as you worry about the War that seems to have no end in sight, and too many have lost their lives, as many more will in days to come. Global warming is making changes to our earth as many have predicted, but many did not listen...there seems to be no easy answer to all of the worries, problems, and this realistic roller coaster ride that we call life, but there we can find comfort in our family, spouse, children and grandchildren, even if it is a temporary zone of comfort that allows one a break away from the outside world...I find that my family gives me the strength to face the cares, troubles, and worries of life...you've penned a beautiful write here my friend...one that displays a beautiful and caring heart and soul, what more can one ask????
Blessings to you my friend,
Joyce Bowling
Unfortunately, such is the world in which we live, Regis. But take comfort, this too will pass, and soon there will be no more sorry, no more tears...you know the rest. Mankind continues to mess up, big time. Peace is not something they will achive on their own. Cheer up! Your worrying yourself to distract will not do you any good. In everything give thanks!
I share and understand your burden, Regis, but my first thought was the same as Lew's. I also heartily agree with Eileen...maybe it will help to remember, that the soldiers who are fighting, say they do it so you..and we...and even they, CAN enjoy memories like these...and prayerfully make new ones! War is always ugly...so thank God, for great poets like yourself, who can bring us the lament...and then, the lilt!
God bless your beautiful heart, Reg.

These are sad times and days filled with hardship for so many across the globe, your thoughts mirror the sorrows and frustrations of life. So very sad Reg! The pretty poem so lovely, only to end in negativity.
I wish I could wave a wand dear friend and make you see how very much you mean to many and especially your children. They would love to see you rise above the trials of oppression that war and other tragedies foster. We have to be overcomers if we're to make it in this chaotic world. Not only for the sake of our loved ones, but for ourselves. I pray you will find the strength to put the second part of your poem in a place that will not deny the first part that gives your loved ones and friends a time to be joyful. We suffer enough with trials, we also need some happiness, especially yourself.
Well written. Sometimes it is hard to see the light through the darkness. We are small, and we can mourn the world, even change it a bit...but we cannot carry the burdens of it all on one soul...so find the light to write that "pretty" poem, Regis. Make the world around you "pretty", for that is all that we can do, and in so doing many will be served by your small flame...
... Looks like your "pretty" poem just went ahead and writ itself in that case, Regis. Yours is the beauty of a sincere and honest heart and a courage to express true feeling without counting the cost. And giving voice to the voiceless has a special music all of its own. The overarching tenderness in this is palpable - both for "My love" and for the suffering. Beautiful and wry. Your guilelessness is always deeply touching. Bless you and thank you, Regis. K xx

I find it hard to be very optimistic myself these days, Regis. And you may not have written a pretty poem, but you've written one that fairly sums up our very sad world today. But if all us souls give up, we will all truly be lost, as will our children.
This one hits right in the gut, (((Regis))), but as poets, we must see the beauty amidst the ugliness, or else we would go mad. Perhaps we are living in a fantasy, but better than reality...a most profoundly moving write, my (((friend))): well done.
Such is this planet and its inhabitants now dear Regis. For me, pretty poems have lost their savor and meaning, especially in light of what I see happening around me.

Heh Regis, from one dad to another, our kids are our world, we are their - to them we are invinsible knights, kings, clowns, jesters, storytellers and as they get older, we are also standby wallets and shoulders to lean on. As individuals, we have little control of the wider world - I learned this the hard way - globalisation? can lead to international solidarity - no bad thing. Global warming? A big con, exaggerated. There were famines and great climactic upheavels centuries ago - more in the 17th century than now. Wars? Afraid we are considered decadent by an enemy that aims to take us back to the dark ages. Have to resist it.
Write that poem for your kids, Regis! I nearly lost my daughter learning the hard way.
"Write Me a Poem" touches two emotions inside me--the joy and beauty of little children at play, and the sadness of war and the annihilation of our wonderful natural resources. The two ideas are irrevocablly joined--everything in this world affecting everyone who lives in it. A great contrast in your poem.
Yes, dear Regis, it is not easy, when heart and mind are encumbered by images and an all-encompassing sense of ugliness, oppression, pain and destruction... yet, when heart and mind are full of love, they can perform miracles... like cherry blossoms of snow. It is not a merely "pretty" poem... it is one mirroring life and reality in their different facets brilliantly!

Observed a lovely sunset,
after a long day has been met?
Better than this,
closed the outside world
out with a goodbye kiss.
Then said hello to your inner being,
the inner world where you are king.
Just enjoyed breathing good,
with strong lungs that are good.
Then watched a little old lady with a breather
struggling just to walk and get air,
then thanking God your body is not yet there.
Knowing she can't depart from her life support,
but you can play on a basketball court.
Treat yourself good Regis because life and others might not,
along with the devil they evily plot.....
Peace and Happiness

I think I like this one better, though.
peace and love, Carole
We must learn to balance the good things
with the bad. Not an easy task to do. Looks like
you have got it started! I know it is not an easy thing to do.
Thanks so much,

aPowerful one at that.
We can write of how we would like it all to be..pretty...but of how it really is...no...no pretty poem will do.
Good on you,I understand how you feel and you expressed it perfectly.
Such beauty, depth, and darkness in this piece. Your words touched me deeply, Reg. I do not know what to say that has not already been said.
Love and peace to you my friend,
Sheila
But we must never, never, never, never, never, never, NEVER give up!
Blessings to you my friend,
Joyce Bowling

What beautiful children...and cherry blossoms!
Love&Hugs&Prayers, Rhonda ps>Jason asked me to say HI! to you :)

nice work on this exceptional poem.....Art Sun...
Yes, we just get too much of
the bad news these days....
Enjoy your work...
Love,
Eileen

Go ahead write that poem. Make it a legacy that none will forget. Put the sadness of the world behind you and talk of only beauty and love.

Too much heartache, too much bloodshed, too many bulging egos, too much lovelessness, too many turning against each other, too much ......
Even though I am very much a realist, I know that it is still good to dream, don't you think?
Light and Wisdom ...
Write that poem for your kids, Regis! I nearly lost my daughter learning the hard way.
