He sat by me on the barstool,
There were just the two of us,
He said, "How you doing stranger?"
And introduced himself as Gus,

He said, "I bet you're wondering,
How I got these bruises here",
And the fact, I didn't answer,
Didn't matter it appeared,

Because he continued with his story,
And he said, "To tell the truth,
When I've had a few Tequilas,
I feel like I'm bullet proof,

And I was on the beach at Cabo,
Two days ago I think,
The sky was clear, the sun was hot,
So I'd had a couple of drinks,

But there was a certain Spanish beauty,
On that beach, and let me say,
I took a liking to her,
Let me tell you, straight away,

But it seems she spoke no English,
And my Spanish isn't great,
So I asked a total stranger,
If he'd be willing to translate,

Now, cold sober and with hindsight,
I can see I should have asked another,
But how was I to know,
The man I'd asked, would be her brother,

And he wouldn't see the funny side,
Of my cheeky, adult chat,
About her bikini being very small,
And how I'd like to talk her out of that,

Ok, I should have got suspicious,
When his face went red, I know,
And his eyebrows knit together,
And his veins began to show,

But I'd had five or six tequilas,
So I didn't see the signs,
Even when he lunged at me,
With murder in his eyes,

I thought that he was choking,
Not trying to start a fight,
But that's when our heads collided,
And he went out like a light,

Falling across his sister,
Who gave out a plaintive cry,
And in dragging her to safety,
I accidentally touched her thigh,

Now I don't know if it's all girls,
Or perhaps it's only her,
But the amazing strength they muster,
When that kind of thing occurs,

I tried to say that I was sorry,
And though I smiled, it's still the truth,
But that's how I got these bruises,
Black eye and broken tooth".

A likely tale… But it certainly does seem to have some truth to it.
