From one end of a village
to another I went
one sweltering day.
The only port in this storm
where hello becomes goodbye.
They sell used cars at the point
where two lonely state roads meet.
Years ago, they seemed so large,
Years ago, it must have been sweet.
I sweat and moan as I walk past
the quiet quiet houses.
An eerie silence abounds,
where is everybody?
Inside, beating the heat.
Only the ghosts and the sound of
long ago commerce are there.
as an old cash register checks out
groceries are there in my mind.
No friendly market,
no country diner,
just gas and quick food in one place.
A wrecking crew
and a beer and the Cubbies
on the cable.
