In 1967, my dad, with three other engineers invented an improved underwater listening device known as a sonobouy. At the time it was primarily for military use. Fast forward to 2014 and flight 370. Today a Chinese search vessel may have picked up the signal from the ill fated jet’s black box. They have requested additional sonobouys to help locate this almost hopelessly lost vital link in the disappearance puzzle. It isn’t the first time the sonobouy has been used for this purpose. It helped solve the mystery of TWA flight 800 which exploded shortly after takeoff from JFK in 1996. I didn’t think of it then, but I now realize my dad and his associates invented a pretty remarkable machine that has and will bring closure for a lot of heartbroken families. I’ll never top that but it does make me very proud.
