I wrote this poem for my newest released book, "The Art of Being Cool". It speaks of my days as a young teenager growing up in Woburn, Massachusetts during the 50s and hangin' out at our favorite joint... "Louie's Pizza".

Since the book's release, Louie's is holding a booksigning event for me on 16 May, 2009, and has this poem proudly displayed within their great restaurant.

“LOUIE’S”

I recall those days of long ago,

When bobby socks and poodle skirts were part of the flow.

Rock & Roll music was the latest thing,

And Louie’s Pizza was the reigning king.

***

Both Louie and Anna Mae ruled Louie’s roost,

And for certain they made the finest pizzas produced.

Families from the neighborhood would gather around,

For the pizzas Louie’s made were quite renowned.

***

The scent from his dough would permeate the room,

We all knew what it was; no need to assume.

And while the music played for all the girls and guys,

Louie worked diligently, just making the pies.

***

I remember sitting in a booth, eating pizza with a coke,

It brings back the memories of who not to provoke.

Anna Mae would smile then pinch you on the cheek,

But should you mess with her your future was bleak.

***

And now that time has passed me by,

It’s difficult to forget, no matter how hard I try.

The 50s are now but merely a dream,

For it was that special era when Louie’s Pizza reigned supreme.

My food memory of the 50's is not Pizza, but the great hoagies we got at the corner grocery store and soda bar. Tom Maheck who is dead now, shredded cabbage for on the hoagies which gave them distintive taste. We went after school when Mother allowed and that was our hang out place and our dinner often too.

You have opened your heart and have shared your special memories. It will always be engraved in your brain and in your heart. Your simple, beautiful memory of the 1950's is well written in this poem. I can actually visualize the poodle skirts and see the pizza place. I was not born in the 1950's but I have seen pictures and movies about the 50's. It was a very special time for many people.

Please visit my authors den sometime. I would love to see you review one of my poems or stories!
