Born Again

Grandma said, “Run in the street.
Just ignore the cars when they beep.
Perfect is being reborn.”
Gorgeous, a beautiful child,
but Grandma made him sad, riled--
he ran in the street that morn.
“Grandma promised I could hear--
kids won’t tease me, not this year.
Gram hates the aids I’ve worn.”
My son, Doug, was nearly five,
pulled my car brake, backwards rolled.  Drive?
Didn’t know that people lied!

Momma said, “Deaf folks are freaks--
draw attention as noise peaks.
He’d be happy if perfect!”
For several months, stayed home,
kept him to myself, my clone.
To her ‘thinking’ I object ...
what mom wants her child to die?
Life is hard.  It makes me cry.
My child, me, are not rejects!
I didn’t stand by idle
while Doug was suicidal--
explained that DEATH is final.

Deaf, like me, imperfect!
Perfect now ... how tragic!
