The essence of being snowbound. In some places in Minnesota and in the Dakotas, it's a long way to town or even the next farm or ranch. When snowed in, one has to wait until the roads are plowed and clear. Drifts can be as hard as concrete and hard to dig out of the way.
We were snowbound in May of either my seventh or eighth year at my grandparents' truck farm in northwestern Wisconsin. Mom and grandpa had to crawl on top of 8 to 10 foot drifts on the road for 1/2 mile and then walk 1/2 mile on the highway that was blown clear by the wind to a little grocery store to get those essentials. The next day, late, a snowplow managed to clear the road by going through some farmers' fields. Our weekend was prolonged until Wednesday when my family was able to get in the car and escape for the hundred mile drive back home.
