From the Pews of St. Sorrows Cathedral

A spiritual poem about humanity taking place in a unique church where existence and faith intertwine.

Silver crosses above their heads
mourners line church soup kitchens
to serve up their last confessions
on their knees praying for deliverance.

Wading through seas of fears
like ships on a convoy
A watery procession: despair and regret
earth like dreams swim in their tears.

Memories frame the landscape like a schooner.
Signal flags are raised mast high.
Standing in line penitent hands search empty pockets
collection plates pass by -
wafers look like cookies

Mouths water in hunger during communion
hungry for affection, love, and a warm hand
to boost them to a higher place
In confidence, esteem, and honor
to share one gleaming hour to touch another soul.

To see white light, glowing on them
to know they exist.
Instead they sit in their pews
watching a movie of their lives

The priest sermons
The choir stares back at the congregation
like some bizarre foreign movie moment
Camus cackles from the wings
interrupting the priest who looks back in anger
only to laugh and say bravo!

The church echoes with a chorale of laughter
strands of heavenly light shine
in a feast, soup pours from a goblet
in stained glass settings above the altar.

A river of contentment swells
and cascades down the aisles
In a dream of surreal quality
complete with full course meal.
The congregation's humanity is served.
