God Played Guitar

God played guitar in a rock-and-roll band.

The music got so funky everybody had to stand.

Their toes started tapping and their feet begin to move,

Their bodies were all swaying; they were dancing in the groove.

God never missed a beat and he could play by ear.

He was a rock star hero by the end of His first year.

God played guitar in a rock-and-roll band

His songs were number one all across the land.

I played guitar; I played rhythm-and-blues.

I put soul in my music and I sang about bad news.

I made people sorrow and I made people cry,

I made folks feel so sad that they wanted to die.

I played all my own songs and I played real good;

Folks soon learned to know my name all across the ‘hood.

Then I heard God playing with his band one day

And I packed up my guitar and I put it away.

God came to visit me just the other day.

We talked about my music and here’s what he had to say.

He said, “Pick that guitar back up and climb out of your hole.

Don't you know music from the soul don’t end with rock-and-roll?”

He said, “Folks need to laugh and they still need to cry.

They need a dream to live for and a reason just to die.”

Now God still plays His Guitar in a rock-and-roll band.

And I'm singing my blues again all across this land.

Londis, you've put together in this poem in a subtle way a message that some people forget, God is sensitive to our human condition and did not design us to all be the same. Neither does he want us under a bushel, miserable, sharing nothing of ourselves. Your poem speaks to more than that, but that would require too much writing. Way to go!

Yes! Lonny, to my mind, this is a marvelous cheer for never letting what may be the very best, silence or intimidate others from still making their own 'life music'... it isn't a competition, this life stuff, it's a moving along the path to where we are going. You make commentary so accessible and affirming. love it... katy xox.

The Wholly Book of Genesis by Jay Dubya

The Wholly Book of Genesis is a humorous satire on the first book of the Old Testament where the Story of Creation, the building of Noah's Ark, Sodom and Gomorrah and the families of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are thoroughly spoofed and broadsided.
