IT’S HARD TO BE THE CAREGIVEE
Verses:
She knows she’ll never drive herself to all her favorite haunts, Never eat without my help at any restaurants,
Never mop our greasy floors or wash our dirty dishes,
Never cook a tasty meal that’s healthy and delicious,
Always have to ask someone for all her needs or wishes.

She knows she’ll never go to stores, put groceries on the shelf, Take a bath or even use the potty by herself,
Never walk unaided, jump or run or climb a stair,
Pull her pants up, put on makeup, even comb her hair,
Not much to look forward to, so how is she to care?

Chorus:
Sometimes she can live her motto: “Bloom where you are planted.”
Other times her outlook’s blotto: gloom and doom and slanted. Sometimes dark and dismal strife is all that she can see. Things are rough, your life is tough, when you’re the caregivee.

Verses:
She knows she’ll never read another word on any page,   Never will recall her wedding day or her own age.
She always must obey me, never do what I forbid,
Be often treated like she’s dumb or maybe just a kid.         Every day’s another day she can’t do what she did.

She knows she’ll never play with grandkids, teach them what she knows,
Never really get to see them, watch how each one grows, Never have them really know her, how she used to be.   Always have to love them through their Grandpa, namely me. It’s not an awful lot to live for, how things seem to be.

Chorus:
Sometime she can be upbeat: light and bright and happy.  Other times there’s just defeat: fright and blight and crappy. Sometimes bleak and boring strife is all that she can see. Things are bad, your life is sad, when you’re the caregivee.

I can relate to this poem very much because I am a caregivee. Fortunately, unlike her, I still possess all my faculties and use them to the hilt so that I don't fall into despair for my condition.

I'm putting so much strain on my primary caregiver that she complains that she has lost "her life" to me. That makes me sad that she is not free because of me. I am also not free because I love to travel and at least right now, travel is very restricted by my condition and its needs, growing all the time.

Keep writing about it because I know you are under tremendous strain to just keep her as healthy as possible until the end when freedom will be hollow because you will have lost the love you have worked so hard to keep.
