Dog, Rover
‘Hey! Don’t leave me here! I wanna go with you!
Why are they leaving me? What wrong did I do?
I always thought they liked me. We had lots of fun,
Chasing balls and fetching sticks always on the run,
But yesterday they chased me out, I couldn’t stay inside,
Today they brought a truck , but they wouldn’t let me ride,
Something bad was happening, I had no food to eat,
They locked the gate, I ran to catch them driving down the street,
This is crazy , I cain’t keep up, don’t they know they left me ,
Soon they’ll remember me, I’ll bet , just you wait and see,
Getting dark, I’m really hungry, I’ve waited two days now,
Maybe I’ll go find them, they got lost somehow,
No , this street is strange, I’ve not been here before,
A man threw something at me when I approached his door,
Hey now there’s a trash can, I hope these folks don’t care,
I’ll just tip it over , smells like food in there,
No, No! Please don’t hit me !, Git Out! I heard him say,
Another worthless mongrel, he should be put away,
I’ve got him cornered , Honey Call the pound ,
Damn stray dogs anyway, They, should be put down,
I was getting desperate , he was mad you see,
He threw a rope and caught me, I struggled to get free,
Rope hit the trash can spilling, he should have let me go,
Now I had a problem, he was fuming don’t you know,
His wife was on the telephone talking to the pound,
The man’s foot hit the drive way curb , he tumbled to the ground,
The rope was tight, couldn’t get away , I was really hung up now,
The man lay moaning on the ground, he was hurt some how,
He started calling for his wife, I was confused and, frightened,
I tried to back away but the noose on my neck tightened,
I was frantic and began to bark, lights came on everywhere,
Soon the yard was filled with folks rushing here and there,
I stood close by, I couldn’t move, the man was bleeding bad,
Then everyone was petting me and calling me good Lad,
The rope was taken from my neck; the wife brought me a meal,
I’ve never had this kind of treatment, it just wasn’t real,
Next thing I knew, I was in the house and treated like a king,
But In my heart I knew the truth, I hadn’t done a thing,
Next day the news folks told the story of that faithful night,
Maybe I am a hero and maybe they are right,
I know I’m loved , a home forever and believe me that ain’t bad,
And by the way my names not Rover, I’m the hero Lad!

I have noticed that all bad Rovers are being sent to Mars where they seem to perform amazingly without human supervision or care.

'His wife was on the telephone talking to the pound,'
You couldn't get funnier. Now tell us why the folks patted the dog: just for barking to bring them to the scene and why they (including the guy who roped poor Rover) thought he needed to be welcomed and given a home for "doing nothing" (in his own words)???
Just you wait, there'd be a chorus praising you in a while...
