My little sister passed away February 5, 1973 at home. She was only 5 and a half years old. On the 25th anniversary of her death I wrote this poem in her memory. April 30th, 2005 marks the 2nd anniversary of my mother's death... so I was thinking about both of them, and decided to post this poem.

Crimson Sunrise – A Sister’s Lament

The cruel sound of mortality

Pierces first light - a mothers cry.

Her child has died in the night

“She’s dead” she screams “she’s dead.”

Memories, burned by the devastation

Of those words etched into my heart

And into my soul, will not depart.

Oh, the deep sorrowful call

As she begs her to awake.

Yet deaths grim collector has been

And gone, and with him, her child.

“God.....please!”  she begs.

Again, the desolate heartbreaking

Sound fills her lungs and is released

As the agonies of hell flood in.

The small, limp being

Once so full of life now empty

Hangs from her arms

And is rocked in dawns eerie half light.

“Don’t go!” the tortured woman whispers

As if in some way to bring the girl

Back.  But, the demise is final.

The life - over.

God has taken back what He gave

And no one understands

The suffering, the anguish of a

Mother abandoned, except Him.

They come.  They take the child

And I never see her again, never.

The mother is despondent, dispirited,

Changed forever by a passing no one

Else can truly feel.

Days are marked by heartbeats -

Those that are - and the one that

Is not.  The hurting goes on and

On and will not stop for her.

Decades pass yet the bleak

Solemn sunrise is still there

The anguish now a throb, the agony -

A hurting, the loss still felt.

I wish I could see her again

Just for one damn moment to

Just see her and to say I love you,

I love you and I miss you.
