Chickadees Finding Food in Winter Ron AI

Carolina Chickadee

A little friend has been stopping by,

A long way from its home.

But this is also its territory,

Where it can freely roam.

The little chickadee came,

Into my tiny backyard.

Hopped around merrily,

Like a singing bard.

Going, "Chicka dee, dee, dee."

its warning sweet and low,

That there are cats about.

So other birds would know.

Had me remembering long ago,

In the snow-covered frozen north,

How they brightened up the dreary cold,

Out foraging fervently to and fro.

It's good to see them nesting here,

After 40 years in the neighborhood.

Knowing that feathered cousins are dying,

Having them here is, oh, so good.

As one nature lover to another, I feel you'll appreciate this...
My first Spring here; I watched a Wren repairing an old nest in the stable. But as she worked, a storm blew in and the nest broke away from its anchorage.
Taking a tin can from the bin, I cleaned it out, and screwed it to the beam; then carefully arranged her broken nest inside it.
To my delight she returned and repaired it again; and there has been a Wren family in that nest every year since.

I appreciate how the chickadee becomes both a visitor of the present and a messenger from your northern past. The way you weave memory, place, and the quiet resilience of these small birds gives the poem a comforting continuity. A lovely reminder of how even the smallest creatures can anchor a lifetime of observation. A gentle and heartfelt poem.

There are some birds that teach us to be patient observers of life, and also understanding of others instead of being blatantly judgemental. The different kinds of Chickadees, the Tufted Titmouse, Warblers, Sparrows, Wrens, and Gnat-catchers, are certainly some of them. For us here in the foothills of the Cuyamaca Mountains, the small things, like watching birds, is one of our most enjoyable pastimes. Enjoy the little guys Ron. They can teach you a lot. r
