Going through some of the things
in your closet, (now mine, by marriage to your firstborn son),
in an old purse,
I find a pair of plastic earrings
you hid away between- even then-
expired coupons.
A child of the depression era,
you saved useless things:
resentment, judgement,
the need to oppress.
You had diamonds too.
Those you saved
for your daughters.
So true - People (especially women) saved everything because they were so deprived. You would have had to live thru the depression to understand what impression that left on the mind. And yes, the people were negative having a hard time to let go of bad feelings as well as material things. Now we are coming out of that. Is it better; I think not. Now life is too fast, less love and compassion, no time for listening, for giving, just no time, period. The values are different. Are better? No--We believed in mariage being forever. The young live together so it is easier to end it. I presume. The old way was hard but this is worse. All this causes much heart-ache especially to their children. Marguerite
