If you don't like coffee, dogs or grumpy old men, you might want to skip this poem.

I’m cross,

I’m mean.

You don’t

mess with me

on certain days

when I first

get up,

sleep in my eyes,

gas on the gut,

coffee,

give me coffee,

quick!

But,

there’s a puppy

down below,

and he’s looking

up at me,

little black, tan and white,

fox terrier,

and why’s he got

that darned smile

on his face anyway,

little stub tale wagging,

I ain’t smilin’,

give me coffee,

and give it quick,

as I stumble across the floor.

Little bugger,

quit circling me,

I’m cross,

I’m mean,

I’m kickin’ quick,

pant all you want,

with your quick puppy smile,

and those adoring brown eyes

at the huge, cross god,

coffee,

give me coffee.

Ahh,

that first sip,

the comforting

bitter, roasted

bean aroma

seeping up your nose

as you look out the window

at the bright bird melodies

sung for your benefit.

Aiiiiiii!

Damn, bit me in the toe,

little stinking pee-wad

of slobbering filth,

don’t you dance around me,

it’s all down the chest,

burning hot,

and you did it to me,

is that blood on my toe???

Coffee,

gotta have more coffee,

first cup didn’t count.

Ooh, that’s better,

first cup half gone,

sinking into the easy chair,

what are you

jumping into my lap for,

don’t you know you’re

in big trouble,

nasty little devil,

hold still while I pet you,

cuddle up here,

ah coffee,

nothing like coffee,

and maybe puppy love.

What are you calling me,

old grump for, Hon?

Just get me another

cup of coffee,

would ya?

I’m busy here,

rubbin’ my puppy’s belly,

ah, puppy,

coffee,

snappin’ little poop.

I've been reading a few of your poems, but I'm tired at 10:25 p.m. and to comment on such stellar offerings would take more thought and concentration than I can give just now.
HOWEVER, I can respond to this adorable writing that reveals the beginning of your day. Any puppy would love this one! and many humans would relate to your morning grumpiness.

Your poem made me chuckle and smile... Reminded me of my dad in some ways. ;~)

It never takes long for a puppy to melt your heart, they are the original anti crab medication. Patrick

Crazy! How funny! So what kind of mood were you in when you wrote this Jerry? Very good, I can really visualize this morning.

That dog has you round his little paw...and good for him...luv the naturalness and immediacy of it all, Jerry, that's how it is...and it's fine.

Oh my God Jerry, this is precious, what a humourous, though most real story, for a minute, I thought I was in your morning slippers,
I remember those days well, and coming to think of it, if we just could all of us a bit more, as that innocent puppy, blood or not ha, but then the wife would complain about my weight ha, and those puppy eyes like yours I can get barely open to look at her, I take my coffee downstairs. You have the greatest! and thanks for the smile!
