The Mirage

We crawl against the wind,
Whipping at our soul.
Promising a life,
That we can never hold.
And as the day grows longer,
We fall upon our side.
For, that wind keeps getting stronger,
Breaking off our stride.
We crawl into eternity,
Reaching out for the mirage,
Only our hearts can see.
Yet still we keep on reaching,
For a life that isn’t there.
And watch the lonely hearts shatter,
When it turns to dust and air.
So, you can keep on crawling,
And waste away your days.
But I shall hold to what I’ve got,
And end the eternal maze.

"Yet still we keep on reaching,
For a life that isn’t there."

A very well written piece. I love the subject matter. As a struggling writer I find myself reaching continously for that ever elusive dream of being the best writer ever and actually being able to make a living as a full time writer. The secret is to always appreciate what you have while still reaching for those dreams and trying hard not to reach for the impossible dream. Thank you for a very thought provoking poem.

i find the premise of this poem inspired but i must inquire, can we really end the eternal maze if we continue to walk the path we are become accustomed to and comfortable with?

Only the shelter of anothers heart can shield us against the imbittered meal life often serves.

There is nothing we can do to change our destiny, but we can steer ourselves to what will happen when "we crawl into eternity". Victor

Oooh I like this one...you've created an image of someone who many might call a "dreamer" one can look at the dreamer in many ways...there are those that live in reality, but occasionally secretly slip away to their dreams...and then there are those dreamers who cannot face reality and live only in their dreams...
Loved this my dear friend...but I like you will hold tight to what I have and endulge occasionally in a dream! Beautifully penned, powerful statement!
Blessings,
Joyce Bowling

Interesting...the holding on to life as it is and the other view of the one reaching and struggling against all odds to grasp more than what is really there...

nice work of thought.....Art Sun...
