I am the mother of 4 sons and 2 daughters. Somehow, I always thought I would have nothing but a house full of girls. What a surprise!
I was not meant to be the Mom Of many little boys My dreams were all of tiny girls Who didn't make much noise. And then when I was twenty God made my dream come true ; He blessed me with a little girl All pink and sweet and new The next few years were busy ones God kept me on the run Especially the first time He blessed me with a son. This little boy was charming His hair was waves of gold Almost like a halo Of an angel, I am told More time passed by and then I learned There soon would be another. But things were now off balance When I gave my son a brother. I thought he'd be a little girl To dress all up in lace Okay; I'll keep this dark haired boy! He has an angel face. My life was getting out of hand And things seemed sort of "wrong" Then two more years went quickly by And Sonny three came right along. He was such a little angel The way he slept at night I thought now maybe I'd retire And end this awful plight That little gold haired angel and the dark haired pretty face? They taught their baby brother How to never walk, just race. They bopped, they banged, they wrestled Excedrin headaches came They rewired lights in ceilings Before they knew their names God knew what he was doing When my daughter was the first But her easy going, quiet ways Did not prepare me for the worst Those years were so exciting But I never came to terms That little boys loved squishy bugs And spiders, mud and worms We made it through the teen years I don't think that I know how They ate what wasn't nailed down And wrinkles formed upon my brow 12 years of GI Joes and cars And talking back and maybe Oh give me peace; I'm getting old What's this? Another baby? A girl, I pray, I need a girl To serve me little cups of tea To dress her dolls And sing to me A girl it was; my heart was full My happiness? Complete But little did I know, Lord That you'd reserved another treat That treat-you guessed-son number 4 At the age of forty three While other folks were taking trips, I'm bouncing baby on my knee Then somehow life grew calmer Though my dreams were rearranged I'd never give my boys away I'm glad those dreams were changed I don't think I need to tell you How they filled my heart with pride I love the men that they've become They've always stood right by my side My girls? Of course, beyond compare They're sweet and kind and true You could not match them anywhere I know God loves them too. As I was saying, ten verses back Despite my many joys I was not meant to be the Mom Of many little boys!

Dearest Carol,
I'm so happy that you are finally putting poems on AD--I've only read a few through the years and always loved what you wrote. This one is so dear, partly because YOU wrote it, partly because I know and love each of these boys and girls, and partly just because it's a sweet and wonderful poem from the heart of a sweet and wonderful person! Yes, I have tears in my eyes now.
I love you, my sweet sister. I miss you.
God bless you as you join in the fun on the den!
Tons of love,
Connie
I must say that I love to read poetry and anything that comes from the human heart especially if it is meaningful as this one is. It is always an indeed pleasure to read such fine and well written work that touches us all in a different way. Thanks for sharing with me and many others. Blessings and peace always to you
