They say you can't go back. I went anyway. They were right. But they were also wrong.

Poem Artwork

I saw a ghost today.
I peered inside
her vacant eyes
and brushed the years away.

I saw her youth,
and she saw mine.
We knew each other's past.
She spoke my truth
in wistful lines
within her dusty glass.

Time had not stayed its cruel hand
while doling out its normal fruits
but twice had dipped into its sand
to lay its poison at her roots.

Now thirty years cling 'round her, thick with rot.
Beyond the grave she pleads with me,
"Restore my former dignity!"
I stretch my hand to save her but cannot.

I helped my father raise her. She raised me.
I lived in her. She only lives in me.

Nice personification of the house you grew up in. Just the other day I googled the address of the old Victorian house with gas lights converted to electricity we lived in when I was in grade school. Amazingly, the street view showed that it is still there although many of the houses on the block are gone.

Can We Come In and Laugh, Too? by MORGAN ST. JAMES

Rosetta was born in 1909 as the youngest of ten children. The family had more laughter than money and neighbors would knock on their door to ask, "Can we come in and laugh, too?"
