An Empty Box
Sitting in the car, I hold an empty pet carrier in my lap
Tears run down my face, knowing he’ll never come back.
Only hours ago, the carrier weighed about ten pounds
With a little meow, but it’s resident lives there no more.
When we took him inside to see the vet, I already knew
what the verdict would be. He was old, and weak and could
barely see. She said the words I would dread,
we could prolong his life a little more, but he’d be in pain all the time.
Or you can know he’s had a good life, than lovingly say good bye.
Deciding to do the last thing we knew was best, he would at
last be at peace and able to rest. Before he left, he looked at me
with his loving emerald eyes, as if to say it will be all right,
I’ll see you again.
And if there is a Cat heaven, and I’m sure there is, my Bob cat is
there now, and hears a voice, “come on in”
In loving memory of Bob, 1992 - 2008
