In memory of Steven 'Bilco' Montoya
1956-2011

Days in our teens, high school classes, new blue jeans
So hard to believe we've come so far.   Life has taken us
down a shaky road, some good some bad.   But do you remember when:
On senior ditch day, we all drove to the lake? Got just a bit stoned,
sunburned, and next day had one nasty headache!
Partied hardy, partied loud, had a ball, drove our parents nuts,
but they survived it all!
Then came the day to walk the line.    Graduation, a time we had
waited for so long.   I kissed you on the cheek we said good-bye,
So nice to have known you, we've had great times.
And now thirty years later, we're here once together again, with all
the rest of our good friends.
We never thought we would see each other again, but the reunion just didn't
seem right. We would give anything not to be here tonight..
We came to see you one last time and give you our loving good-byes.
While we think and remember your wonderful personality and smile;
We silently ask ourselves, why did this have to happen?
You were much too young to die.

It is so sad when we lose someone we loved but memories are still there for us to bring up and remember them by

Yes, much too young. And you shared much more than just being classmates. Coincidentally, I just received a note from my secret high school sweetheart, who, unfortunately was the sweetheart of our class with a great resemblance to Shirley Temple. After romances with the best guys in both high schools, she married well, had two daughters and still retains that ageless beauty of a real sweetheart. She's signed the note, “Love,” and meant it.

It is always hard to face the loss of our peers. It's like looking at ourselves lying there but still and silent.

grief one of those life experiences most would rather avoid, you've handled it nicely here, and I could completely relate to your high school days :)

So sad. . .but you have managed to turn the experience into a source of
inspiration! Other side of grief is the joy of remembering, isn't it.

Wonderful tribute, Mary!

Am so sorry for your loss Mary. The title of your poem caught my eye and knew it would make me cry as i lost the man i loved last year (just realised that that is probably the last time i will be able to say that) who was also called steven (although h eliked to be known as Steve) This is a very touching tribute to your friend. God bless. Baz

Sorry to hear about the passing of your friend Steve - Bilko. As I'm still e-hunting for former classmates, I do keep coming up with names where I think they have passed ... so sad ... makes you feel so young and yet so old at the same time. Too soon to die -- that is for sure.

Sad, with happiness laced throughout the poem. That is the way it should be. If it is possible in the beyond death, Bilco is smiling . . .
