My beloved husband went home on October 1, 2008.
Cancer took his life.
He died in my arms.
I was blessed to have him as my husband for nearly 37 years.
I miss him.

I watched you as you slept
wondering how much time was left
when we said "till death do we part"
I never thought about a broken heart
Dreams of growing old together
replaced hopes of happily ever after
Your breathing is so shallow, you sleep so deep
I know that you can feel me here
praying as you sleep
Lord please take away his pain, please make him whole again.
If it is his time to go home, please let him know I won't be alone
I'll have your love and peace to help me carry on.
Watch over him Lord,
this man that I love.

The day turns into night and I can't take my eyes off of you
drinking in each feature of your face
etching them in my memory, the words "I love you" are not enough to say what I feel for you.
We have grown up together as man and wife.
The darkness creeps into the room, but the Light is waiting for you.
I hold you in my arms and whisper,
"I'll be alright, go if you must. God will take care of us."
With those words spoken, you open your eyes.
You have never looked at me this way, your eyes so filled with peace, and grace.
In just one instant you are gone.
You are now in Jesus' arms.
We will be together again one day, whole, and without pain.
I love you just is not enough to say
but I love you, I love you, I love you
I love you.
Good bye my love.

Tears are still rolling down my cheeks as I'm writing about this poem. It's so sweet and reminds me of the time I had to tell the first man in my life goodbye whom I LOVED so much....My Dad...and now I know my husband's healh is going away as he has difficulty walking and standing and doing thigs he used to do. It's hard on HIM and it hard on ME! We just take one day at a time. God gives us STRENGTH and Comfort knowing that HE is in CHARGE now and actually has been all our Life. MEMORIES are such WONDERFUL GIFTS from GOD!! God is Good all the Time...All the Time God is Good!

Dorothy, this is such a beautiful telling of the last hours you had together! My heart goes out to you in so great a loss. I thank God for all you have to look forward to. What great consolation! Thank you for sharing this most intimate glimpse into your heart.

How your heart aches and how sorry I am. Your words speak of such a timeless, reverent love. The kind that does not come along often. You remain in my thoughts and prayers as you now take time to heal...

Be always safe,
Karen

Hello Dr. Dorothy,

Your poem is beautiful. I watch my brother slowly surrender his body to cancer and I prayed this same prayer, "Lord please take away his pain..." if only to ease his suffering and to relieve me of torture, because it was eating me up inside. But all this taught me humility and submission to the human fate of illness and death, and gave me hope to the promise of God in the life eternal.

Cynthia
