Where you learn what nouns and verbs are - or are not!
At school, they taught me Names were NOUNS
Like Angela Smith and Sally-Ann Downes;
A VERB, they said, is a word we do,
Like run and walk and seek and view.
Americans confuse their words
And mix their Nouns up with their Verbs;
Their children aren’t called NOUNS like Barry,
But VERBS, like Chuck, and Chip and Carrie!
The English aren’t immune from blame
They have their failings, just the same;
Their children’s names are odder still,
They call them questions like Watt! and Will!
Italians end their names in ‘O’
They say it helps their language flow;
And Moors from Mecca to far off Bali
Call ALL of their kids either Ali or Ali!
The Africans repeat their names
They call it rhythm not childish games;
The best example I can give you? -
The delightful Bishop Tu-tu!
So Names aren’t NOUNS and VERBS don’t Do -
Just jargon, flawed, like me and you;
And what we try to say to who,
Is never quite what we meant it to.
