Time helps ease the pain of loss

Poem Artwork

Father's Day 2004 I said:

I REMEMBER DADDY

sipping tea from tiny cups
holding the jump rope while we jumped

waltzing Mama around the house
walking three daughters down the aisle

holding my tiny son, his first grandson
growing old before our eyes

loss of memory, loss of strength
and when the end was near

remembering only my mother's face and his first grandson

I remember Daddy

Tom Hollingshead
1907 - 1985

and today I continue to say

I REMEMBER DADDY

'where is your dad?'
follow the sound of the whistle

The Old Rugged Cross
sounding across the garden

or from his work area
or out in the shed

'where is your dad?'
follow the sounds of tinkering

hammer blows down at the chicken house
sounds of sawing from the shed

'where is your dad?'
follow the sounds of silence broken only by a turning page

bible in hand under the weeping willow
zane grey in hand on the back porch

be she 8 or 88; the man who is her father is always called DADDY by a daughter of the South

Sounds and smells can invoke beautiful memories. I'm happy you have them.

These poems are sad and yet beautiful at the same time. I can feel and see every word, the tea parties; your parents waltzing around the house, the walk(s) up the isle, all of it. Very touching.

I see my dad sitting in his easy chair turning the pages to the bible.

How true I will always remember my Daddy although he is not earthly bound any longer. Wonderful that you opened your heart and let these words pour out "And I STILL Remember Daddy."

Heartfully beautiful~all the best and take care,

When i think of a man close to God, I think of my Grandpa.
Now that he is not here I still talk to him knowing he is with our Heavenly Father Jesus Christ. The Lord is also not with us in body but in Spirit. It comforts me to know my Grandpa was a champion for Christ and that he waits for me to join him in Heaven.

This one made cry, as have been blessed to be around many a Daddy (and grand daddy, Paw Paw in my case who also wanted a boy but had 4 daughters during the depression, WWII and beyond to Elvis), and their daughters of the South, having been born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia and its environs. Yep, cornbread and chicken, iced tea and cocola, Just hanging around and sittin' and eatin' watermelon on the front porch with the rest of yunguns.

Loved this one, MJ!

I can feel the love. Some dads used to be so "hands off" with their children. Very, very endearing. Eileen

Amen - My grandfather was more Daddy to me and my siblings. There is nothing more influential in life and nothing more devastating when the course of life takes Daddy home... Thank You for this beautiful tribute.

A true daughter's attribute.

The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said,

'After he has died, the believer only gets the benefit of the following actions and good deeds: knowledge which he has taught and passed on, a righteous son he leaves behind, a copy of the Quran which he has bequeathed, a mosque he has built, a house he has built for the traveller, a water channel he has dug, or an act of charity which he spent out of his property when he was alive and in good health and which comes to him after his death.'
