The Steadfast Tin Soldier

The tarnished old tin soldier,
His sword half its former self,
Stood steadfast and stalwart
On the dusty nursery shelf.

Waiting for little Clarence
The master brave and true
He had not seen for many a year
And didn’t know quite what to do.

He’d watched the parents coming
Through the grimey nursery glass
Then place the single-vased daffodil
And weep as they’d quickly pass.

He stood watch by the yellowed note
Written with a childish flair
In bold ink with an old quill pen it said,
“Goodbye. I know you don’t really care.”
