Shattered childhood dreams

This is the result of an exercise put forward by the writing group I am a member of, we had to use 5 words, purple parasol, black beard, Bunsen burner, shell & white dress, these words were to be used in a poem of any length, short prose or short story max 1,000 words, this is the 1st time I have done something like this & really had to use my imagination. Being the pirate fan I am, the words black beard got me straight away.

Shattered childhood dreams

Let me tell a story, t’was quite some time ago
An event I didn’t want, anyone to know
What started as a lovely evening?
Left me heart broken, deflated and seething.

Deciding on a night out, I scoured the local paper
What caught my eye, a performance at the little theatre?
A live show it was, of pirates on high seas
Being a diehard pirate fan, I figured this would please.

The show was truly awesome, act one then act two
Swashbuckling action, in my seat, I was stuck like glue
Not wanting to move or miss a single scene
What was about to happen, I could never have foreseen

Now as I mentioned earlier, of pirates I’m a fan
Like Long John Silver and his motley little clan
The one I love the most and people thought me weird
That great mariner of wisdom, good old Black Beard.

The curtain rises once again
So far it’s been such a gem
Revealed is the Captains cabin
With a diamond shell on a bed of Jasmine.

Then on a corner table I spied
An item used, so cleverly devised
Ornate brass lantern polished so bright
With interned Bunsen burner projecting soft light.

What happened next caused me great distress
My childhood hero in a layered white dress
I wanted it to stop, my head was spinning
Couldn’t stand the dainty way he was prancing.

Now when he displayed a pretty purple parasol
That’s when I lost, all form of protocol
I ran from the theatre my mind all tattered
Childhood memories left dumped and shattered.

I loved this, though I must confess, Yellow Beard came to mind...And of course the pirates of Penzance, with that crazy John English..What an exercise, thoroughly good reality check.
:) Ch'ezza hehe

Hey Dave,

Given the task with the unique selection of words, all have been masterfully blended into a poem which has all the greatness to stand alone.

Well done mate, awesome!

Stuart
