All those of us with cats are quite familiar (and comfortable)with our pets. I've never trusted anyone who didn't like cats.

KEEPERS

At two ay-em,
When my menopausal bladder
Forces me to consciousness,
I savor the last moment,
Urgency and ecstasy,
Before the ultimate insult,
Puttting warm feet
To cold floor.

As I ease one leg out,
Arm following, I snag on
Furred weight of cat,
One before, the other aft;
One back to my belly,
One belly to my back,
Padded bookends for this
Dog-eared, well-thumbed volume.
A honey agate eye
Gleams in the night-light
(that, before, I never needed);
Another eye, impossibly blue,
Opens once, then closes.
Warm rumblings synchronize and harmonize,
Paws knead blankets,
Twin yawns split jaws into
Hearts of pink O’Keeffe,
Edged in ivory.
They will await my return,
Born to the task in palaces and temples,
A million years of gene-pool,
Keeping the night safe,
Guardians of warm.

You can trust me, Patti. My cat, Kitty, was kind enough to let me live with her for about 18 years. She's been gone for four years
and I miss her everyday, especially when she's no longer seated on the keyboard when I'm trying to work. Love this. -gene.
