Poem Artwork

Tears ran down his glistened cheeks

He hadn’t felt like this in weeks

Reddened eyes, his sight a blur

He couldn’t help but think of her

A week ago left high and dry

She went to see some other guy

Now filled with misty tears to cry

To himself he could not lie

He gently stroked the knife’s sharp edge

As he whispered softly another pledge

This one bet he would never hedge

Then he slowly cut another wedge

The tears renewed their fragrant flows

As onion fumes wafted through his nose

This, the weekend duty he chose

The thorns endured to pluck the rose

Smiling while the soup pot bubbled away

He knew she’d be coming home today

The week was long but there was no way

She’d miss visiting her dad on his birthday

You do have this talent for sucking the reader into your plot...but not this time... snicker, snicker, snicker. Excellent little poem.

This is excellent poetry! Patrick, you have a knack for writing poetry that differentiates between working-man-dog-humor and serious snippets of a much larger serious-minded novelistic approach. I encourage you to build a novel. Your writing is inspiring with a social dimension...be well you and Eileen.

Love,
Sage

Don't know if you're the guy cooking the soup and if that soup is french onion soup, but your words bring back a memory of my father whos only cooking skill was making french onion soup that at that time I really didn't care too much for... What kid, I ask, likes french onion soup. But what I wouldn't give for a bowl of dad's homemade french onion soup now.
Your friend, Mark
