Steam trains and I go together in my life.

Poem Artwork

Somethings get locked in your brain

like the sound and the smell

of a steam train,

those beasts on wheels

that hiss and pump

shout out clickety click

as they roll over the tracks.

Trains with gusto and panache

the ones with carriages

where the doors shut with a friendly click

where windows slid up and down

on leather straps.

I would watch those mighty wheels

as they slipped

when they pulled away

then gripped like feet

ready to run,

then watch as they pulled away

heading into the Sun.

I've had the good fortune to ride on a few. Noisy and smelly… Why nobody wanted to live near the tracks… They still grip one with nostalgia as they wheeze and work hard to make the next hill or mountain.
