Before retiring, I was a care giver primarily to the elderly. I've worked in nursing homes, retirement facilities, hospitals and private homes. It is not an easy job but the greatest challenge is to care and love but, not become attached. However, even though we are taught while training, not to...one can't help it...we develop feelings for our patients/clients and it doesn't 'stop at the door', as we are instructed that it should. I wrote this work many, many years ago as an 'ode' to the very first resident that I fell in love with. It was a very hard lesson learned...I was broken when she passed. I remember I had to stop work and leave the floor...I went out onto the stairwell and sat and cried. She was an elderly alzheimer's patient, in her own little world...totally unaware of what was going on around her but still...as her caregiver I came to know her...through the pictures on her wall and...to 'see' her...as she once was...within her eyes

Pressing on...

Poem Artwork

   I've often looked within

the windows of your eyes

and there caught a glimpse

of all your past ties__

I've seen you in your  crowning role

...a parent

young and bold__

You are there fast and agile on the court

returning a brisk serve

that your racket has caught__

How you ride so strong thru the air

...on horseback you fly

swiftly...without a care__

I watch you smiling...with glee

at a gathering of friends

and members of your family tree__

I see all of this...and then I note

with a sadness of heart...

that there is no antidote__

To release you from the dark progressive cast

which snatched you from reality

and won't relinquish its grasp__

A destructive army...moving from cell to cell

taking you farther and farther

into oblivion...to dwell__

But we'll meet again...of this I'm sure

when we shall hear the trumpet's peal

... on a bright and golden shore___

Your reasoning...free...no longer bound

we'll sing God's praises

on His celestial grounds__

And when with joy I then gaze

within the windows of your eyes

you will recall...as I

the loving memories...of all past ties

A remarkable and touching poem. I know of the pain of Alzheimers as I saw the changes in my wifes uncle. You have a compassionate heart. May God bless you every day of your life.

Once, I walked on a long corridor of an elderly "home" where they sat in a long row, waiting. Then and there I decided to never get old!
Because I didn't wanted for somebody to look in my eyes/windows and see the darkness of the dungeons below.

Joyce, This is outstanding poetry...I could actually feel and see this woman's life as I read your poem..She was so lucky to have you when she was lost in her world. You knew what she was going through, from a medical perspective, and that in itself was a blessing for her..You must be very proud of yourself to know that you did make a difference to her during the last part of her life here on Earth...You are a wonderful, loving person and never forget that.

Much peace, love, and light,
Amber

A powerful love poem as sure as one can be. Caregivers in my eyes are the angels God sends to the infirmed and elderly and you are all a special breed of people. Thank you for all the care and love you shared for your little family, they will all greet you in heaven. God bless you always.
