Sunlight drifts through mossy strands
From gnarled fingers of a mighty oak's hands
Creatures calling from darkened holes
Tiny infant fuzzies warm and bold
Three pairs of eyes with masked delight
Clicking their greetings and welcoming night
One bold little infant with claws hung out
Dares this challenge to walk about
Each fingered grip is carefully stroked
For new nerves calling on this mighty oak
Testing nature...the dare is here
Little masked creature crawling there
A tad too high then a shrieking call
"Momma come get me...I'm not this tall! "
She beckons to her "batman" with soothing clicks
"Back on down Sugar...and do it quick!"
Siblings echo Morse-coded calls
"Strong tiny masked one, please don't fall!"
Momma and me with knuckled breaths
Pray for this baby with all our depth
Finally secure with others in tow
Momma Raccoon...striped tail aflow
Gathers her babies, safe for this night
Til a dare beckons wee ones for another test flight

I've been reading alot of nature poetry lately, and yours is way better than most of the ones I've been reading. I really enjoyed this, you brought to life the scene, and I felt like I was there hearing and seeing it all. I will be reading more of yours:)
Splendid piece Susan, I could really see this happening like it was in my own back yard. Very descriptive and good flowing write...I too will see a bit of Georgia's backyard tomorrow morning.
