The remains of Air Force Maj. John L. Carrol of Decatur, Georgia, who died during the Vietnam War, have been recovered and will be returned to his family for burial 35 years after his death.

Poem Artwork

This is the tears of war. The fees we pay for freedom. It is battle's destiny that touches home in it's final tribute.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ave Maria echoes from the rafters of the domed cathedral
It pierces the silence of doom that befriends the dead
Organs become mute to voices of angels here for burial
Where war returns the Patriot to his beloved unafraid
Colors of bravery cloak the pine as tears wash over his courage
Grief is alive while bravery is spoken instead
Mortals grieve for the Gods of Destiny
Festooned with wings now the sons of the Dead
Ava Maria the chorus of angels sing to the spirits
While hearts reach out for love that will never be fed .
May Major Carrol finally rest in peace.
I posted an article recently about five other soldiers shot down over Laos 40 years ago, who were just buried at Arlington, and I truly hope all six of these families now have some peace, too.
Thirty-five years is a long time to wait for closure....
May his family now have the peace he has.
I had not heard about Major Carrol. You have spoken for each of us; those who want to pay proper respcts to a fallen defender of freedom. Thank you. They are, indeed, loving, honoring, and respecful of one who paid the ultimate price. Here's hoping that his family receives a copy of your tribute. Love, - Bill
You captured my imagination and my true emotions with the thundering echo of your words. Ave Maria has always been the one hymn that could bring tears to my eyes and combine that with veterans and my heaet cries. Stunning Susan.
Your poem, shows that there is always hope, even after loss, I am sure the family is comforted by the finding of his remains,which is a strange word, because we are referring to a human being......sigh
Your poem is a gift of love, a gift of heart, and of the highest respect.....Its beauitful Sue........pax A
The picture and your poem speak so clearly about the devestation of war and the sadness left in its wake.
"... While hearts reach out for love that will never be fed ..." This sums up the hurt of war.
God bless you. Kathy
