When you go from a battered child to a battered wife, sometimes you begin to believe THAT is all life will ever be.

Quietly folded into the night
sheltered and shamed . . . hidden out of sight;
raggedy doll, unable to speak.
My jaw’s at angles . . . I whisper weak
lacking a backbone
can’t stand alone;
Battered and beaten I soon fall down.
My smile is painted; inside I frown.
Bloodied, tossed with the wash to get clean
I’m agitated; he’s simply mean
When tears have dried
I’m folded outside.
The children, like starch, stiffen my will
Like little statues sitting so still
They dare not make him angry . . . it’s sad
Forced to be angels, dare not be bad
As I grow old
Quietly unfold.
I behold the orange haze of day . . .
Quietly watch as the children play,
seek our escape while the master sleeps . . .
I’ve promised them LIFE . . . this time for keeps.
Grew a backbone . . .
strength of my own
I shivvered as I read this well-penned poem, as I experienced the same type of life in the past. It took me 17 years to escape, to work up the courage. But a personal bought with cancer opened my eyes to "life is too short." I have a new husband, and a new life, and I am happier then I ever imagined I could be. Believe me, there is very much hope for you. My prayers are with you that you can be free again.
So hard in that situation to stand up: fear of leaving the kids, fear of enforcing the no contact rules. Thank god for the battered women's homes we've got now.

Sandy, this is an extremely important piece of poetry, which you have penned with absolute clarity. It is always such a shame that anyone should ever endure this type of treatment. May the grace of the Creator, and His soothing gentle winds always carry you and yours, safety throughout time and space. I hope and pray that someday very soon, every human being will live in comfort and peace. Thank you for sharing this priceless creation, my friend.
“Being a couple yet free is our next challenge on the evolutionary ladder. This book successfully helps us unravel the myths that block that achievement. It does it with warmth, with readability, and with balance. It recreates everyday problems and
