The beauty of a woman must be seen from in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mode but the true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It is the caring that she lovingly gives the passion that she shows. The beauty of a woman grows with the passing years. ~ Audrey Hepburn~

 The Measure of Beauty

When we see beauty our eyes are affixed
One cannot help but to be so transfixed
For in each mind there’s a measure we see
Our own concept of what beauty would be

For we do know the nature of man
Inherent biological nature they have
But truly to know what beauty doth mean
I give you an insight for you to glean

It comes from the way that a true laugh begins
Followed by eyes that will show it so pinned
True beauty is gentle and nary is mean
Beauty is something that can be unseen

For to see beauty you must look beyond
All of the make-up and clothes to be donned
It’s always a gentle and sweet tender touch
Given to others and never asks much

Always is felt from the person who gives
Always truistic and nary selfish
Beauty nary asks for a thing in return
Nary a flaw will be seen please discern

Do not be fooled by the make-up and clothes
Do not be fooled by the physical rose
For we all know a rose carries thorns
Making you bleed once the flesh has been torn

Look beyond what the rose cares to share
Beauty's on inside and outside is bare
It does not come with perfume or face
For nothing in this can beauty be traced

But look to the heart of the person you see
Look beyond all of the mind’s fantasy
For beauty is only found within the soul
Once found within its true beauty you hold

Your poem reminds me of these verses from the poem, "Ode on a Grecian Urn" by John Keats:

'Beauty is truth, truth beauty,—that is all
Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.'

Thank you for awakening thought and reflection, Carol. Love and best wishes,

Everyone knows true beauty comes from the heart and all that you do for others. You can't paint people up with make-up and call that beauty. You have it right my dear

Lily, There are so many snippets to what beauty is. It is the women who know the true meaning of beauty for they are always being judged. I look at women's eyes...Thanks!

Lily,
Once again i am after so many have already said so much truth here. You are a remarkable poetess and convey in very loving words universal truths. Your gifts expressed are the bounty upon which we should ponder and heed.
The beauty in either man or woman is told in the eyes as it flows from the heart.

I am delighted that I ran across your site and this poem. You have so well painted the true image of beauty like it truly is. It is what comes from within. Oh yes it is...

Well written

My very favorite line is: "It comes from the way that a true laugh begins" I love that and it can apply to men. Second runner up is: "Beauty's on inside and outside is bare" that is just sterling! I feel pretty beautiful just reading this. ~~ Diana

Excellent poem Carolee,

You inspired me to write more passionate poetry! Praise God!

I see the beauty in the eyes of my lover in her deep green blue's.
She also has a warm loving heart and soul that beats for two.
When the time is just right and our passions rise.
No thorns wan be seen from the rose of this man's eyes.

Peace, love and blessings,

John Michael

It's a common mistake made by man since we live in a visual world. We seek visual beauty in our clothes, cars, art, homes and most everything else. All of which have flaws, we grow bored and their beauty fades so they get replaced. The beauty you describe is immortal and many times over looked or misjudged by perceptions. A bit idealistic without exception because even beauty has it's moments of lapse. Surely the whole person concept allows for being human.
Wonderfully written.

Stay well and keep writing

Beauty is one of those elusive traits that is a combination of the soul and the senses. While mortal man cannot resist the beauty of a woman's body, they are also attracted to the beauty of a woman's mind. Her eyes tell so much about how she feels. Your poem so eloquently described that any amount of accessories is not reveal true beauty. In fact, accessories often revealed the opposite–a selfish person.

Beautifully written with a very strong message.

Yes, indeed, roses do have thorns and it is a perfect example concerning the outward beauty of woman. Still, we cannot help but be taken by this outward beauty, it attracts, mesmerizes and gives us a warm feeling. Only after the superficial beauty has done its job and has been the reason for a smile, a word, some kind of beginning. After that beginning is when we began to see through the makeup, et al, and find the true and tender beauty within. Great poetry, Carol.
