Eventually, the inability to hear reaches everyone, that is, if they live long enough.

And my one right ear, well, it's just plain dead. The TV's on, and it's turned up high. It's way too loud, and that ain't no lie. Our son walks in. Grabs hold of his head. And with a loud voice yells, You tryin' to wake the dead? I tell him, Son, there's comin' a day. And it won't be long before you're hollerin', Hey? The apple doesn't fall far from the old apple tree. Soon you'll ask of others, Were you talking to me? ©2016 By David Lee Thompson

I love this! It's good that we can find humour in such things...
But have you ever been accused by your wife of 'selective hearing'? Lol
I remember my Mother accusing my Dad of it...:-)

Your poem falls very close to home. My mother is so near deaf that the strongest hearing aids no longer help her. It looks like I'm gradually moving that way. People around me keep telling me that I've turned the TV up to high and I've started to use close captioning to try to catch words I don't. Although it's quite funny to see what comes up on the screen.
